Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then found many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police state preliminary tests suggest the substance was likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A high-ranking official said the incident left him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in 2020.
